Hari Hachi Bu for Portion Control and Weight Loss
If you have never heard of Hari Hachi Bu, it might sound like the name of a child’s rhyming game. However, if you are trying to lose weight or control your diet, you may want to do a little more research into this. This is the art of eating until you are 80 percent full and then stopping. This is something that helps the body control portions and teaches someone to listen to then signals the body is sending out when we have been taught to ignore them. This could help you lose weight or maintain an ideal body weight.
This is an Okinawan eating tradition that helps them be one of the longest living groups of people in the world. They may not see it as a diet, though, as it just the way they live. Consider it a lifestyle choice the they believe allows them to live a longer and more healthy life. Not only do they only eat until about 80% full, they rely mostly on fruit, vegetable, fish, whole grains, and soy foods with limited meats as their dietary staples. These are the basis for a healthy diet no matter where you live in the world.
You may think that eating until 80 percent full sounds simple enough, but it is something that people can struggle with when eating. It is simple enough if you take your time and try to listen to your body. You have to eat more slowly when you use the Hari Hachi Bu method. You ingest the right foods until you are almost feeling full, and then you put down your fork or push your food away. The body takes 20 minutes to register that it is full, so by stopping, you give your body time to catch up and say that yes, it has had enough and you are good to go until your next meal.
When you get use to the Hari Hachi Bu way of eating, you are going to find you have better portion control. You learn to take smaller portions so that you are not always leaving food to waste on your plate when you finish. You may also find that you are more satisfied than you would be if you were to have eaten more. Some extend Hari Hachi Bu into other parts of their lives by cutting down on everything else when it makes sense. You may find your whole way of life and thinking is changing when learning and living Hari Hachi Bu for yourself and even your family.

When my health got compromised because of my overweight I decided to join the Smart for Life cookie diet. It’s amazing how it works! You eat six cookies during the day (the cookies are made with complex carbohydrates, protein and fiber) and you have a sensible diner in the afternoon. This jump starts your metabolism and teaches your body to eat smaller portions more frequently.
I lost 44 pounds and after a year I have maintain it by walking 5 times a week, eating small portions 6 times a day and making healthier choices. Thank you Smart for Life!!!
